Meet  Patrina from Las Vegas!

Our Natural Hair Nation is proud to celebrate Women who embrace the freedom of their natural hair. We’re excited to also introduce our audience to naturally free women who are doing wonderful work in the world. One such woman is Ms. Patria McDonald – Green from Las Vegas, Nevada.

 After dealing with the tragedy of losing her husband Patrina turned her pain into a passion to help others through her online social networking site – Patrina’s Wisdom. Here is her story.

 Patrina’s Words:

 I started Patrinawisdom.ning.com as a tribute to my late husband who I lost to suicide in Jan. 2009. Patrinawisdom.ning.com is a web community (similar to a facebook) for like minded folks to come and share stories of triumph over tragedy, and support and inspire others in finding their true purpose.  The site to bring light to the issue of the superman/superwomen complex. Those of us who pride ourselves on always having things under control, those of us who never ask for help but long for the support of others, the ones of us who are always of service, giving unselfishly of ourselves, and yet not giving ourselves permission to articulate our needs, expecting others to just know and give back unselfishly.

 “Patrina Wisdom” serves as a social networking site offering people an open forum of communication, a safe haven of support, to assist them in reclaiming their power within and creating their best life. It’s an inviting and engaging setting for those who have or are in the process of overcoming life altering experiences. On the site I share life’s experiences and invite you to share your stories as well. My social network seeks to “lock arms” with those who wish to support or experience support in the process of overcoming adversity and creating a purpose filled life. To every problem there is solution!”

 My hope is that people are blessed by my story and are motivated to do whatever it takes to break the cycle of the Superman/Superwomen Complex in them, their families, and their legacy! I want people to know that’s its ok to ask for help!

 Patrina’s Hair Story

 ONHN: Tell us about your beautiful natural hair! How long have you been Natural?

I  have been natural for 15 years.

ONHN: Did you do the Big Chop?

I did not transition. When I got pregnant with my first child at 21 I shaved it off. I didn’t want to be bothered doing hair. I always wore a pony tail anyway. I needed to reinvent myself.

 ONHN: How did your family, friends and loved ones react when you went Natural?

 They were shocked but supported my decision.

 ONHN: Did you experience any strong emotional or spiritual feelings when you first went natural?

 I felt free. I felt like I had found me and that I gained strength.

 ONHN: Did your decision encourage them to change also?

 Everyone in my family wore relaxers and wigs until I went natural. Now my mom and I are in it together but she still battles with letting go of the wigs.

 ONHN: How does wearing your Natural hair make you feel / sexy/confident, ect?

 Patrina: I feel like a one of a kind. I feel confident and grounded in who I am. It is now a reflection of who I am.

ONHN: Did you feel this same way when you wore straight/relaxed style? 

Patrina: No. I felt like I was just one of many and didn’t really feel my uniqueness.

ONHN: How do men react to you with Natural hair as compared to relaxed hair?

Patrina: They love it! People are fascinated by my blond fro. They always want to touch it.

ONHN: How do other black Women react?

 Patrina: Most people are in awe of my hair. Its bold, it’s true, it’s me. People of different cultures are even more fascinated by it.  They see my power.

ONHN: What products do you use on your hair now? 

Patrina: I use a Morrocan oil products for curly hair. 

 

ONHN: Do you use color on your hair, if so how does it affect your hair and how do you treat it.

 Patrina: I have a wonderful colorist and friend named Rachael Jackson at the Solis Salon on Centennial in Las Vegas, Nevada. She has been coloring my hair for 13 years. When done properly, color does not damage natural hair at all.

ONHN: How can people support your organization?

Patrina: Join my site, create a profile, share your story, share the site with friends. Get involved in discussions, groups and forums on the site. I am in the process of forming the “Hands of Comfort foundation” to support the awareness and prevention of depression and suicide. I am authoring 3 books, will be engaging in more public speaking and will release a new inspirational NeoRock album next year. All of the launches will be announced on Patrinawisdom.ning.com
